Electronic Arts announced in a press release that its Battlefield Heroes game has passed the two million registered users plateau. EA is looking for names for a new map they have created for the game.
Set against the backdrop of autumn colors, the new map will be infantry-focused and set in a village with dozens of intersecting canals. Intense battles will play out on the bridges and crossings, while sneaky players can use the alleyways and channels to move unnoticed for sudden flanking maneuvers and rear-guard actions.The free online game has been quickly gaining users. Joystiq says they passed one million users in July. The game does utilize Battlefunds - a fictional currency bought with a credit card or PayPal - to purchase certain character customisation items. Players can also make purchases with Valor Points (points earned by playing the game) if they have accrued enough of them.
Starting today, EA is accepting proposed names for the new map at http://www.battlefieldheroes.com. Players can submit a proposed name for the soon-to-be released map, and that name may be selected by the Battlefield Heroes development team.
"Along with this new map, 'Heroes of the Fall' includes a slew of changes including upgrades of the Gunner class and improvements to the friends system," said Ben Cousins, General Manager, Battlefield Heroes team. "We've also added a brand new ranking system for the game - players can earn cool new titles for their heroes as they play - showing everyone on the battlefield how dedicated they are."

While Songbird is no longer providing official builds for Linux users, contributed builds of Songbird for Linux are still available for download.
Songbird's service pane has also been given a facelift, bringing a more polixhed look to the left-hand side of the player's main window.
The only big usability improvement here is the new magically-expanding search field that shows suggested results as you type. Page load times don't seem noticeably different, either. Also, as TUAW points out, the changes aren't iPad compatible yet. Is this the kind of revamp that only die-hard Apple fans and software bloggers will even notice, or are the changes in the site obvious to the average customer? More importantly, do you like the new site better than the old one?
UPDATE: The site now seems to be displaying properly on the iPad.

Mac trojans have already become increasingly common in 2010, and McAfee finds that "lack of user understanding of proper security for these devices, will increase the risk for data and identity exposure." This lack of understanding, coupled with the increased presence of iOS devices in business environments, will make Apple users a prime target for malware.
The report also finds smartphone users will face increased danger in 2011. With hundreds of millions of new users purchasing more powerful phones and spending more time browsing on them, increased attention from malware authors is a natural (albeit unwelcome) side effect. If the app store for your phone offers security applications, there's no time like the present to read some reviews and get one installed.
Apart from smartphones and Apple devices, social engineering attacks (e.g. scams via Facebook, Twitter, e-mail and social networks) will continue to be big in 2011. McAfee asserts that personal information made available via geolocation apps and privacy lapses will allow attackers to better craft their attacks on individuals. There's also no sign of viral attacks on social sites like Facebook and Twitter slowing down, and short URL services will continue to be used to hide malicious links. Activision Publishing CEO Eric Hirshberg added some more insight into the company's shift away from the music genre, explaining that even though DJ Hero 2 and Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock were well-received, "demand for peripheral-based music games declined at a dramatic pace." He continued, "Given the considerable licensing and manufacturing costs associated with this genre, we simply cannot make these games profitably based on current economics and demand." However, Activision will continue to support its existing music games with DLC.
We're still left with a lot of questions, though (and we're working on the answers). For instance, what does this mean for the 3DS-bound DJ Hero 3D? What about the Tony Hawk series at large? Activision's frequently spoken about its staying power -- and if no Hawk title drops in 2011, it would be the first calendar year in the franchise's history without a new entry since 1999.Permalink | Email this | Comments

Though the "irreverent quiz show party game" was once overwhelming in presence, You Don't Know Jack has been the recipient of precisely one retail release (2003's YDKJ: The Lost Gold) in the past 11 years.
Now, the cult classic has finally made its debut on modern consoles, and though it may have learned a few new tricks along the way, it's the sadistic, hilarious comeback fans have been waiting for.

Unfortunately, downloading the 148MB update is the only way to get the glossy new Mac App Store, packed with apps like the iLife and iWork suites, Aperture 3, and yes, Angry Birds (which just days ago arrived on Windows as well). Of course, we're downloading now and will be getting some serious hands on time with the new Apple app market in the coming days.

In the announcement of the release dates, Gaijin's Alex Neuse revealed that there is no "Game Over" result in Flux -- which is a pretty sharp contrast from the other five Bit.Trip games, in which "game over" is basically the natural state. "To help tell the story of CommanderVideo's transition back to The Source," he said, "we wanted to convey the point that it is an unstoppable pull which draws him home. For this reason, there is no Game Over."
Flux is designed to be completed in a single session, something that "most players" will be able to do. The challenge will be in reaching and sustaining the "Meta Mode" for as long as possible by hitting consecutive beats. CoD4 is perhaps the first example of a 'killer app' for the Mac App Store, and exactly the injection of big-name awesomeness that it will need to attract other games publishers, and software giants like Adobe and Microsoft. CoD4 might be a little old, but given the awful Cold War-era graphics cards available in most Macs, it's probably a good idea that Modern Warfare 2 wasn't released first.
It should also be noted that this isn't the first time that a digitally-distributed game is more expensive than a boxed version from Amazon. Steam is regularly more expensive than Amazon (though not usually by such a margin), and World of Warcraft bought directly from Blizzard as a digital download is more expensive than buying a box from Amazon, or your local games shop.
What remains to be seen, though, is whether software on the Mac App Store will be aggressively discounted like on Steam. The whole point of digital distribution is that you can sell something for almost-free, and still turn a profit. Let's just hope that the Mac App Store doesn't become another place for Apple to gouge its users for more money -- digital downloads are convenient, but they really should be cheaper than their real world counterparts.Permalink | Email this | Comments
There's a story line, but it's not very important. The gist of it is that you're a scientist stranded in an outpost, and there's an alien invasion. Your encampment is all the way to the right side of the screen, with swarms of aliens coming in from the left and trying to invade. Your job is to shoot them and defend your turf.
As the game evolves, you gain experience points. At the end of each level you go to the store and choose what you want to spend your points on: new buildings, new weapons, upgrade existing weapons, or invest in repairing your base.
The final goal is to build a weapon that's advanced enough to use against the alien mothership. This is done by building enough research buildings - but you must balance the buildings you buy with your weapons upgrades, because each swarm of aliens is stronger than the last.
